Job Summary

The Public Health Data Systems Intern will play a key role in advancing public health’s digital, data, and analytic priorities. Working with Public Health Surveillance (PHS), the intern will support efforts to modernize data systems and strengthen the analytics/reporting infrastructure that supports population health assessment, operational reporting, and evidence‑informed decision-making.

 

This position is ideal for a student eager to apply technical skills, analytical thinking, and curiosity to real‑world public health challenges.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with program areas and Regional IT staff to support the design and implementation of modernized data systems and reporting tools.
  • Understand documentation requirements, process flows, and opportunities for automation of current analytic/reporting processes.
  • Collaborate with Epidemiologists and Data Analysts to design workflows to improve the creation of dashboards that inform program planning, performance monitoring, and situational awareness.
  • Assist in the design and development of data pipelines that automate the extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) of public health and program data for the future.
  • Support the integration of diverse datasets into cloud-based environments (e.g., Azure SQL Database, data warehouse, or data lake).
  • Contribute ideas and digital solutions that streamline data workflows, improve data accessibility, and modernize reporting processes.
  • Support troubleshooting, quality checks, and issue resolution for data and system-related inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • A recent graduate or will graduate by June 2026 from a postsecondary program in Data Science, Data Engineering, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience with at least one programming or scripting language: Python, SQL, or R.
  • Understanding of data pipelines, ETL processes, and data modeling.
  • Experience with data visualization tools, preferably Power BI.
  • Experience working with relational databases, data management principles, and structured data environments (e.g., data warehouses, data lakes, automated data pipelines).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn quickly, adapt to new tools or methods, and respond positively to feedback.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience with cloud-based data solutions such as Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with public health concepts, population health data sources, or relevant legislation (e.g., PHIPA) would be an asset

Working/ Employment Conditions

  • Must meet eligibility requirements for Halton Region’s internship program.
  • Current (within 6 months) acceptable Criminal Records Check by the first day of employment.
  • Hybrid work model: minimum of 3 days in office 
  • May be required to travel within Halton Region for meetings or project support (as applicable).
