Job Summary

The purchasing and inventory Intern will support a one year project focused on assessing, standardizing, and improving inventory management and supply chain processes across three long term care homes. This role will evaluate current practices, identify inefficiencies, develop standardized procedures and controls, and help implement improved systems to enhance accuracy, reduce cost, and strengthen accountability.


This internship is ideal for a student or recent graduate in business, supply chain management, logistics, healthcare operations, or a related field.

Duties & Responsibilities

Current State Assessment (Across All 3 LTC Homes)
•    Review and document existing ordering processes, approval workflows, and inventory controls.
•    Conduct process mapping for supply ordering, receiving, stocking, and usage tracking.
•    Interview staff involved in purchasing, inventory, finance, and clinical support roles.
•    Evaluate current vendors, order frequencies, pricing structures, and product standardization.
•    Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and risks (e.g., stockouts, overordering, lack of controls).

Data Collection & Analysis
•    Gather and compile purchasing, usage, and inventory data from all three homes.
•    Analyze trends, cost drivers, stock levels, and waste patterns.
•    Evaluate the efficiency and accuracy of existing inventory tools or software systems.
•    Benchmark current practices against sector best practices in long-term care supply chain management.

Process Improvement & Standardization
•    Develop standardized supply ordering procedures for all LTC homes.
•    Create uniform inventory controls (e.g., PAR levels, standardized product lists, approval steps).
•    Recommend improvements to inventory systems, workflows, and documentation methods.
•    Draft updated policies, SOPs, process flowcharts, and checklists.

Implementation Support
•    Assist in rolling out new processes, tools, and controls across the three sites.
•    Support staff training sessions, including creating training materials and step-by-step guides.
•    Monitor adherence to new procedures and help troubleshoot early issues.
•    Gather feedback from home leadership to refine process improvements.

Reporting & Documentation
•    Prepare regular progress reports for leadership.
•    Present findings, metrics, and recommendations to senior management.
•    Maintain project documentation, including data summaries, SOP drafts, and evaluation notes.

Skills & Qualifications

•    Enrolled in or recent graduate from a Supply Chain, Business Administration, Logistics, Healthcare Administration, or related program.
•    Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
•    Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
•    Ability to conduct interviews, gather information, and document processes clearly.
•    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
•    Detail oriented, organized, and able to work independently across multiple sites.

•    Project management skills
•    Experience with inventory management or supply chain software.
•    Knowledge of long-term care or healthcare operations.
•    Experience in process mapping (e.g., Visio, Lucidchart).

  • Travel will be required within Halton Region. The incumbent must provide their own transportation.
