Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Immunization Resource Team, the Public Health Nurse in this position will be responsible for responding to requests for service to the Intake line; investigating and managing cases of clients experiencing an adverse event following immunization (AEFIs); and will play a supportive or lead role in quality assurance (QA) and communications projects and initiatives within the Immunization Services division. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Receives and manages all inquiries for immunization services (residents and healthcare providers).
  • Receives, investigates and manages all suspected cases of AEFI that meet provincial reporting criteria as part of the vaccine safety surveillance system. 
  • Monitors and reviews updates or changes in Ministry guidance and assess potential impacts on existing policies, procedures, and practices. 
  • Develops and updates policies & procedures, job aids, Health Education Resources and provides support to program areas related to best practices in writing and quality assurance of these documents. 
  • Leads the development, updates, and maintenance of Medical Directives.
  • Writes content for internal and external audiences (e.g., facts sheets, web content, presentations, etc.).
  • Supports the implementation of evidence-based practices and participates in “QA projects” as requested. 
  • Functions as a member of a team, collaborates with the health department, division and the community to implement Immunization Services programs.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing. 
  • Registered Nurse (RN) in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Clinical background in Public Health Nursing and an understanding of the core principles of public health.
  • Ability to analyze complex situations and to solve problems. This is critical to identifying potential risks and developing effective strategies to improve processes and/or practice.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to write reports, SBAR consults, policies, medical directives, presentations, web content and effectively communicate to diverse audiences. 
  • Ability to interpret Ministry guidance, professional practice standards, research evidence and best-practices, and translate into practical applications that guide practice.
  • Project management skills and the ability to coordinate multiple tasks, manage timelines, and work with diverse teams to support the development of documents such as procedures, directives, tools and resources.  
  • Experience leading/performing quality assurance initiatives.
  • Experience working on a call center or intake line responding to incoming inquiries promptly and professionally. 
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Publicly Funded Immunization Schedule.
  • Experience with investigation and case management of AEFI reports.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to make effective and timely decisions. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other databases and software such as Panorama, iPHIS and Seibel. 

Working/ Employment Conditions

  • Flexibility to work outside of core business hours including evenings, weekends and holidays is required.
  • Travel will be required, incumbent must provide their own transportation. 
  • The incumbent must be able to provide a current complete record of immunization according to the Ontario provincial immunization schedule.
