Job Summary
Reporting to the Senior Project Advisor (SPA) in the Engineering, Construction & Transportation Management (ECTM) Division at Halton Region, this position is responsible for assisting project managers to deliver a variety of municipal infrastructure projects including transportation (road), water and wastewater infrastructure (eg. pump stations, sewers and watermains), as well as waste management projects.
As a member of the (ECTM) Division, you will be part of a dynamic team of individuals, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders for the successful delivery of infrastructure projects, whilst gaining the opportunity to learn the fundamental processes of Project Management. Our team’s mandate is to design, construct and commission infrastructure to maintain existing Regional assets in a state of good repair as well as to build new infrastructure to facilitate new growth and development.
You will collaborate with your peers in the four local municipalities that make-up Halton Region, such as: Town of Halton Hills, Town of Milton, City of Burlington, and City of Oakville. Internally you will be working with members in Road, Water Distribution, Wastewater and Solid Waste Operations Teams as well as Planning, Asset Management, Finance, Realty and Legal teams.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct research and make recommendations to adapt new technologies, techniques and materials in the design and construction of water, wastewater, transportation and waste management infrastructure.
- Review engineering drawings, contract documentation and retrieve data as required to perform various job functions. Create project cost estimates based on historical data and using costing tools.
- Assist in preparing meeting agendas and minutes, managing project invoicing and project files. Perform engineering calculations and reviews.
- Assist in quantity take offs in preparation of construction cost estimates/payment certificates. Assist in compiling construction tender documents.
- Attend design and onsite construction meetings.
- Participate in field walkthroughs to monitor construction progress.
- Participate in corporate training associated with corporate business and governance processes. Assist in the preparation of reports including the analysis of project and program delivery metrics. Support Project Managers / SPAs with preparation of project permit applications.
- Assist with the execution of project/program driven communication with the public, elected officials and senior management.

Water Distribution & Wastewater Collection:
- Water and sewer mains (using both trenchless and open-cut construction methods)

- Landfill expansions

Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering or related field from a university accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.
- Interest in pursuing a career in the delivery of engineering services and major capital projects in a municipal environment.
- Capable of planning and implementing work in an organized manner and working collaboratively with others.
Preferred
- Excellent communication and critical thinking skills.
- Superior time-management skills with the ability to manage workflow in order to complete work on time and within expectations.

- Interns will be expected to be in the office 5 days a week.
- Travel will be required to various project sites and/or training courses; incumbent must have a valid G license and have access to a personal vehicle.
