Job Summary
Reporting to the Supervisor, Infection Prevention and Control in the Health Protection Division, this position is responsible for supporting the work of the Outbreak Prevention Program. Key activities include but are not limited to: investigation and management of respiratory outbreaks in congregate living settings such as long term care and retirement homes, correctional facilities and acute care settings; facilitating applications made under the Mandatory Blood Testing Act; providing surge support for enteric outbreak and communicable disease investigations and responding to other infection prevention and control inquiries.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead investigations and management of respiratory outbreaks in long term care homes, retirement residences, correctional facilities and hospitals.
- Provide IPAC consultation and outbreak management support to healthcare providers and congregate living settings.
- Conducts investigations and enforcement related activities under the authority of the Health Protection and Promotion Act.
- Develops and implements educational initiatives on a variety of infectious diseases, vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) and infection prevention and control issues for agencies, institutions and the community at large.
- Facilitate applications made under the Mandatory Blood Testing Act.
- Investigates reports of infectious diseases and responds to infection prevention and control related inquiries.
- Participates in activities related to the management of emergencies of public health importance
- Responsible for utilizing an electronic database as part of case management systems
- Maintain liaison with a variety of agencies including representatives of local, regional and provincial governments.
- Undertake special projects and surveys as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Degree in a program of instruction approved by the Board of Certification with the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors combined with a current certificate in Public Health Inspection (Canada) and related experience.
- Two (2) years of recent experience related to outbreak management and investigation is preferred.
- Must possess strong evaluation and analytical skills, along with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Must be able to effectively deal with internal and external groups to achieve departmental and organizational goals.
- Proficiency with MS Office

- Working hours: Flexibility to work outside of core business hours including evenings, weekends and holidays is required.
- Required to serve on standby on a rotational basis.
- Travel will be required; incumbent must provide their own transportation.

- Valid Ontario G class driver's license.
- The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, including Vulnerable Sector Screening by the first day of employment.
