To be eligible to apply for a summer student position, you must meet the following criteria:
- Legally entitled to work in Canada as a student.
- In possession of a Social Insurance Number (card) at time of hire.
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis and returning to school in the fall of 2026.
Job Summary
This role is responsible for supporting Halton Region’s Indigenous relations initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct research and analyze various local, regional, provincial, federal and Indigenous advocacy and priority issues.
- Gather data, information and synthesize information.
- Review relevant Indigenous reports followed up by summary.
- Prepare briefing notes, resource material as required.
- Respond to research requests.
- Support the Indigenous Relationship and Engagement Work plan.
- Provide assistance to Indigenous Advisor in relationship building initiatives.
- Other duties as required.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- The successful candidate will possess a knowledge of the Indigenous narrative in Canada and either possess or be working towards a degree in a field with an Indigenous focus.
- The ideal candidate will have an Indigenous cultural competency and knowledge of Indigenous research practices.
- Excellent research, verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills are essential.
- The successful candidate must be analytical, organized, and resourceful, technically savvy, knowledgeable of Indigenous news streams.
Preferred
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in or with Indigenous communities and attain at least one reference letter from a recognized Indigenous community and/or non-profit organization.
- Knowledge of Indigenous language is an asset (i.e. Anishinaabmowin (Ojibway), Michif, Kanien’keha (Mohawk), Muskegowuk Cree…).
- Strong data analytics, political acuity and proficient in Microsoft Suite are an asset.
