Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Government Relations, the Policy Specialist provides support to the Government Relations team through research, policy review and analysis, monitoring key issues and legislation, preparing briefing materials and supporting events and activities to help advance strategic priorities and Regional advocacy issues with the Provincial and Federal Governments.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Conducts research and analysis related to provincial and federal policy, emerging legislation, motions and municipal advocacy issues.
- Proactively monitors provincial and federal briefings and announcements of Regional importance and prepares summaries as required.
- Supports the development of briefing materials and advocacy strategies on priority issues (i.e. briefing notes, advocacy documents and plans, environmental scans).
- Prepares reports, presentations, memos and letters of correspondence.
- Attends meetings as needed with partner organizations and associations (i.e. AMO, FCM)
- Monitors and identifies relevant funding programs and consultation opportunities and provides support in the preparation of Regional applications and responses.
- Supports the planning and execution of local government announcements and events. (i.e. funding announcements and groundbreakings)
- Participates on various working groups and committees and attends events as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- May occasionally be required to work outside of regular business hours.
Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Public Administration, Political Science or a related field with a minimum of two years work experience preferably within the government sector.
- Proven understanding of regional government, knowledge of municipal advocacy issues and experience supporting government relations activities.
- Strong knowledge of Provincial and Federal Governments and legislative processes.
- Strong analytical skills to conduct research and analysis, interpret complex information and data, identify insights and support the development of recommendations.
- Excellent time management and project management skills including the ability to work independently and with staff from various departments and partner organizations.
- Solid judgment, problem solving, political acuity, tact and diplomacy skills are essential.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong internal and external relationships.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.
- Must demonstrate flexibility, strong attention to detail and excel in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience planning and implementing events with government officials and community partner organizations.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
