To be eligible to apply for a summer student position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada as a student.
  • In possession of a Social Insurance Number (card) at time of hire.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis and returning to school in the Fall of 2026.

Job Summary

This role supports Halton Region’s housing and homelessness programs by assisting residents, providing administrative support, and contributing to the development and coordination of initiatives that strengthen housing stability and homelessness services.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Function as part of an effective team, supporting staff across homelessness and housing programs.
  • Provide excellent customer service in a team environment, communicating respectfully and professionally with residents, clients, service providers, and staff.
  • Provide administrative support, including organizing files, preparing materials, and assisting with data entry.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and follow privacy requirements at all times.
  • Demonstrate the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment, show proficiency with Microsoft Office, and be willing to learn new software and tools used in homelessness services.
  • Work closely with Homelessness & Supportive Housing staff to assist in the planning, coordination, and implementation of homelessness initiatives and system improvement activities.
  • Support research tasks such as reviewing best practices, gathering information from service providers, and summarizing findings to help inform program and policy development.
  • Provide support on activities related to shelters, supportive housing, outreach, and homelessness prevention as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Enrolled in a social science or public administration program.
  • Keen interest in homelessness and housing programs and policies, and supporting vulnerable residents.
  • Familiarity with some housing issues and the role of housing and community development in supporting vibrant neighborhoods.
  • Strong interpersonal written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Organized and detail oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and ability to learn new systems, databases and digital tools.

Working/ Employment Conditions

  • The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen, by the first day of employment.
