Job Summary
Continue to grow your legal practice as Assistant Corporate Counsel at Halton Region. This position focuses on solicitor work, including contract drafting, legal research and providing legal advice to a broad variety of client groups. A lawyer with experience in public procurement and/or construction law is preferred.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Drafts, reviews and co-ordinates legal documents including procurement documents, opinions, waivers, contracts and by-laws.
- Researches, analyzes, counsels and advises on legal implications and risks in matters related to municipal affairs, regulatory compliance, policies and procedures, as well as operational and strategic decisions.
- Negotiates agreements or settlements with third parties.
- Maintains a regular awareness of legislative and political activities that impact or influence the operations within Legal Services and other Regional departments.
- Prepares memos and briefs to keep the Region’s senior management and clients informed.
- Reviews council reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- The successful candidate will be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the practice of law, preferably with extensive experience working at or on behalf of a municipality.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills, as well as strong analytical, research and client service skills.
Preferred
- Experience in public procurement law and/or construction law is preferred.
- This position with be part of the Infrastructure and Realty Services Legal Team. Some of the Departments/Divisions that will require legal support include:
