Job Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Policy, Department Administration and Heritage Services, the Policy Advisor position helps to shape the direction of Corporate Policies and Procedures for the Region. In doing so, the Policy Advisor will have the chance to collaborate closely with stakeholders from across the organization and contribute to the continuous improvement of Halton Region’s corporate policy framework and related staff resources. This temporary position also provides project management support to Halton’s Emergency Management team.
Duties & Responsibilities
Policy Research & Analysis: conducting research on other corporate policies, trends and policy practices to inform new policy development or updates to existing policies
Stakeholder Engagement: working with internal stakeholders, including the Corporate Policy Working Group, to share information and ensure policies and procedures align with the Region’s strategic goals; participate in corporate committees, working groups or communities of practice as required.
Drafting, Editing & Developing Policies: providing support to policy owners and authors on drafting and revising corporate policies to ensure they reflect clear and consistent language.
Policy Implementation Support & Monitoring: helping to ensure new corporate policies are put into practice and followed across the organization and managing the corporate policy inventory.
Regulatory Compliance: staying on top of any changes in laws or regulations to make sure our policies remain compliant. Monitoring changes to provincial acts and regulations and their potential impacts on Halton’s policies.
Advising & Reporting: advising senior management on policy-related issues and preparing reports, presentations and memos to keep everyone updated.
Training & Communication: providing input, as required to policy owners, on implementation strategies and training to assist staff in understanding and following new policies.
Continuous Improvement: supporting the ongoing improvement of Halton Region’s Corporate Policy Framework including maintaining the corporate policy page and the development of staff resources.
Skills & Qualifications
- Degree in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science or a related field
- Minimum three to five (3-5) years’ experience working in government, preferably in the municipal sector
- Excellent writing, research, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to work independently and to meet multi-faceted conflicting and shifting priorities
- Strong collaboration skills
- Strong project management skills, organized, adaptable
- Political acumen
- Proficient in MS Office suite
