  • Legally entitled to work in Canada as a student.
  • In possession of a Social Insurance Number (card) at time of hire.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis and returning to school upon completion of the co-op work term(s).

 

This position will require the successful incumbent to provide proof of co-op eligibility, a transcript and tax credit form(s) from their school’s co-op department.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor of Technical Services, this position is responsible for providing technical and administrative support to a multidisciplinary operational support team working with Region water and wastewater treatment facility operations staff. The Technical Services team provides support to facility operations groups by providing data coordination and reporting assistance, and leading optimization initiatives such as trials, studies and capacity demonstrations. The Technical Services team also provides engineering support on capital projects, and operations lead process reviews and upgrades.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide support in procuring engineering services including preparation of Request for Quotations (RFQ), Request for Tender (RFT) and Request for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Analyze engineering drawings and retrieve data as required to perform various job functions.
  • Perform engineering calculations and reviews.
  • Prepare presentations, graphs and technical reports.
  • Analyze, interpret and effectively communicate data for reporting purposes.
  • Liaise with internal Regional Departments (including: Asset Planning, SCADA, Treatment Plant Operations and Maintenance etc.) to support delivering projects.
  • Assist in preparing meeting agendas and minutes, managing project files.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Examples of past co-op student initiatives:
    • Review, summarize and document results from a side by side instrument trial. 
    • Wastewater treatment plant stormwater management works inventory and maintenance plan development. 
    • Development of a strategy for long term granular filter media quality monitoring program. 

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

  • Currently enrolled in a Civil or Chemical Engineering program, or equivalent, at a recognized university.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. Experience with Microsoft Teams.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with co-workers, management, internal groups, and the public are required along with time management and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, interpersonal, teamwork, and listening skills.
  • Eligible to participate in a 12-month co-op term (September 2026 to August 2027).

Preferred

  • Experience in water and wastewater treatment, engineering design and project management.
  • Completion of at least two (2) full years (four (4) terms total) of an undergraduate degree.

  • Candidates should assume a minimum of three (3) days per week will be required at the base office location of Mid-Halton wastewater treatment plant. In addition, site visits to other Halton Region facilities will be required. 
  • Flexibility in working hours will be required as there may be frequent trips to operational facilities.
  • Travel will be required between locations within Halton Region, the successful candidate must have and supply their own transportation.

  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license by their first day of employment.
