Job Summary
The Waste Management Maintenance Coordinator is responsible for inspecting and coordinating maintenance for the active Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS) and 11 closed landfill sites within Halton Region. Maintenance requirements will include pumps and other leachate handling equipment at the HWMS and four of the closed landfills, as well as ensuring other landfill infrastructure at all sites are maintained in a state of good repair such that MECP and other waste management policies and regulations are followed.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate and conduct landfill infrastructure monitoring and maintenance activities for one active landfill site and 11 closed landfill sites within the Region to ensure all infrastructure is maintained in good working order.
- Assist with ensuring the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA), and other rules and regulations for the landfill sites, are met to ensure they sites are complying with the requirements.
- Conduct inspections of active and closed landfill infrastructure on a weekly basis; collect performance data and prepare written reports on findings.
- Inspect and coordinate maintenance of pumps and other leachate handling and ‘grey water’ infrastructure, including responding to operational alarms.
- Diagnose problems and perform minor repairs; make recommendations on other required repairs or improvements.
- Coordinate other repairs, preventative maintenance or upgrades through the Region’s maintenance staff (including creating computerized work requests) or with contractors directly to ensure issues are resolved quickly.
- Coordinate and inspect remediation and other construction projects, such as landfill cover and seep repairs, this may include obtaining quotes, reviewing tender documents, and administering preventative maintenance contracts.
- Monitor SCADA systems to ensure systems are operating as designed.
- Coordinate and oversee flushing operations for all leachate collection systems.
- Performs snow plowing and salting using a pick-up truck and/or front-end loader.
- Perform after-hours standby duty on a rotating basis and train others who are part of the standby team.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public and interact with contractors and others in a professional manner.
- Performs other duties, as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Secondary School Diploma.
- Minimum five (5) years of experience in positions responsible for maintenance of infrastructure.
- Training in and in-depth knowledge of pump and wastewater systems maintenance, including knowledge of pump stations and associated equipment (electrical, mechanical and instrumentation), SCADA functionality, and leachate collection infrastructure.
- Knowledge of leachate management and overall landfill operations & maintenance, such as seep repairs, drainage & grade improvements.
- Ability to interpret design drawings to validate and provide comments on proposed work and interpret operating and maintenance (O&M) manuals to effectively inspect equipment and repairs.
- Construction knowledge to assist with small to medium projects, including road construction, landfill cover upgrades and preventative maintenance programs.
- Contract administration and project management skills.
- An understanding of safety practices as mandated under the Occupational Health & Safety Act as well as a practical knowledge of relevant MECP and other regulations.
- Computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel.
- Possession of valid "G" Ontario driver's licence.

- The position requires periodic work outside normal working hours, in inclement weather conditions, and challenging terrain (e.g. steep, slippery slopes).
- Requires heavy lifting in excess of 20 kg.
- The candidate will be required to participate and work after-hours standby.

- The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original, and acceptable Criminal Records Check by first day of employment.
- The incumbent will be required to drive a Regional vehicle and will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license and a driver’s abstract, by their first day of employment.
