Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor, Waste Collection Operations, the Waste Collection Customer Service Technician will ensure collection activities are in compliance with all solid waste collection contracts and Waste Collection By-Laws and will provide high quality customer service to residents by investigating, resolving and responding to inquiries and complaints in a professional and timely manner.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts ongoing inspections of collection activities in the Region to ensure that the solid waste collection contracts are completed and services performed in the required manner.
  • Responds to requests and complaints received from the public regarding waste collection; conducts investigations, resolves collection problems and prepares related reports.
  • Ensures that Regional residents are in compliance with Waste Collection By-laws and communicates effectively when a resident is not in compliance.
  • Identifies problems and recommends solutions to supervisor and contractor.
  • Prepares daily and monthly reports and compiles statistical information regarding waste collection policies and procedures, as well as contractor performance.
  • Maintains up to date records, schedules and files relating to inspections conducted and reports prepared.
  • Instructs and gives daily guidance to contractors, supervisors, and operators.
  • Ensures appropriate Region staff are informed and advised of daily collection activities.
  • Responsible for progressive discipline towards contractors, supervisors and operators.
  • Ensures contractors comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Prepared to evolve and adapt with future legislative change, collection contract requirements, customer service needs as required.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma in Environmental Services, or applicable field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience monitoring, overseeing, administering solid waste collection contracts.
  • Excellent problem solving, organizational and customer service skills with the ability to deal with the public and provide direction for compliance with Waste Collection By-Laws.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Knowledge with MS Office, web-based GPS tracking systems, and customer service software platforms.

Working Conditions

  • The incumbent must have Flexibility in work hours including serving on rotational standby schedule and work on the occasional Saturday is required.  
  • The incumbent must be able to perform all of the necessary physical tasks associated with waste collection and processing, including lifting weight up to and including 50lbs.

  • Current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, by the first day of employment.
  • The incumbent will be required to drive a Regional vehicle for extended periods of time and will be required to provide a copy of their driver’s license and a driver’s abstract, by their first day of employment.
  • A valid Ontario Class G driver’s license is required.
