Job Summary
The Wastewater Treatment Operator will be responsible for operating, maintaining and inspecting wastewater treatment facilities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Monitors, analyses and adjusts process parameters.
- Performs standard laboratory process testing and maintains accurate records and logs.
- Participates on project teams and assists in the evaluation and implementation of technological improvements.
- Conducts facility tours for members of the public, schools, universities and Regional Council.
- Performs housekeeping, janitorial and other general maintenance duties.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- A minimum of a secondary school diploma and a Level 1 wastewater treatment license.
- Applicants must possess and maintain a valid Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) Wastewater Treatment Class one (1) or higher. A valid Operator in Training (O.I.T) with some wastewater treatment experience may be considered.
- Strong mechanical aptitude, manual dexterity and computer literacy (Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook).
- Initiative, the ability to work as a team and independently along with strong communication, problem solving and analytical skills.
Preferred
- Post-secondary school education in a related environmental field and with Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) wastewater treatment licensing (Levels 2 to 4).
- Knowledge, understanding and experience with the application of related legislation and acts (Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ontario Water Regulation Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Environmental Protection Act).
- Familiarity with SCADA technology.
- Relevant experience in a laboratory or wastewater plant.
Working/ Employment Conditions
Working Conditions
- Flexibility in working hours is required to support 24/7 on-call and there may be periodic meetings and functions outside of regular business hours.
- Incumbent will be required to serve on standby and respond to after hour callouts, as specified by Public Works Operations Practices.
- The successful candidate will be required to maintain MECP operator license for Wastewater Treatment.
- The incumbent must be able to perform all the necessary physical tasks associated with the position including lifting, bending, kneeling, crawling, climbing ladders, working from scaffolding and heights.
- The ability to work in confined spaces and oversee and perform designated duties in inclement weather is also required.
- The incumbent will be required to safely handle designated substances, including caustic and acidic chemicals.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times.
- Training and relevant PPE will be provided.
- Wastewater activities also involve working in unsanitary or odorous conditions at times.
Employment Conditions
- Current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, by the first day of employment.
- The incumbent will be required to drive a regional vehicle, a copy of their valid G driver’s license and a driver’s abstract will be submitted by the first day of employment.
